CES 2014: DDR4 is Here

The new DDR4 memory has been under development for more than five years and is expected to bring higher performance and a reduction in power consumption. It also means that the end of DDR3 can be seen on internal roadmaps as it will slowly be phased out like DDR2 and DDR1 memory kits were as new DDR4 platforms come out across the PC spectrum.

PC hardware companies are coming up BIG in this space. Intel, Kingston, ADATA and a few others even showcased the new technology with prototypes, at the CES 2014 event in Las Vegas.

The Kingston DDR4 demo at CES 2014 consisted of a 384GB of DDR4-2133 RDIMMs running at 1.2 Volts on a future 2P Intel server reference platform.

Another demo was by the Taiwanese giant, ADATA Technology. They are gearing up for the arrival of DDR4 and at CES with a couple of memory modules based on the standards. ADATA's DDR4 sticks have 8 GB and 16 GB capacities and run at 2133 MHz with CL15 latencies while powered at 1.2V.

The only downside to this is that DDR4 might come to servers before hitting the PCs and Laptops.

  1. Don't DDR3s also run at 2133 mhz these days at latencies of 11?

  2. Since DDR4 was in the making for 4 long years, brands have pimped their rigs to set new benchmarks with DDR3 itself. DDR4's are expected to start with 2133MHz - DDR3's start with 1333MHz. Latency is a different issue altogether. Its like you can polish your Mercedes all you want... but its not going to be a Porsche :P
