HTC One M8 will Kill the S5 & 5S

HTC has got its paws on the face of two of the "supposedly" best smartphone makers. Amidst the madness which Samsung and Apple had created with the price for Galaxy S5 and iPhone 5S respectively, HTC is surely going to turn a lot of heads. This much awaited gadget is now launched in India for Rs. 49,990 and will be available in the market from May 07, 2014.

My personal salute to HTC just for breaching the price barrier. This is what a flagship gadget should be like - High on Camera, High on Processor, High on Power and high on Performance. What's more - IT HAS RADIO.

LET'S ANALYSE:

As expected, HTC M8 gets the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core chipset to boost the speeds up to 2.3GHz. What brings this device in the limelight is it Camera settings which promises a different experience all together. The company agrees improvements in the Blink feed as well. The classy formal look gives a tough competition to its top notch performance - which is also a drawback of a kind.

The HD screen, high performance RAM, processor, Loudspeakers, Camera, NFC, etc. are known as Best Battery Drainers and the HTC M8 sports only a 2600mAh battery - A Let Down. Though the company claims to have improved the battery performance to upto 20 hours on 3G network, I am sure that it will be green for 5-6 hours at most.

A really compelling premium smartphone. This is Android's answer to the iPhone with a gorgeous design, fluid interface and performance, and a capable specs sheet.

With the given high end specifications and the price hype, HTC was expected to launch this in India at around Rs. 58,000. In other words, it is in-line with the phone giants, but... with an updated Sense ;) (If you know what I mean)

HOT FEATURES:
  • Cool Value proposition of Rs. 49,900/-
  • 2GB RAM is more than enough for extreme gaming on Android
  • 2.3GHz processor - FYI the Samsung Note 3 in India is octa-core 1.9GHz, which is worse
  • 4 Ultra-pixel Rear Camera - Same or even better than a 13MP camera
    • Has an additional camera sensor for detailed images
  • 5MP front facing camera
  • Android 4.4.2 - The latest KitKat
  • NFC, Bluetooth and a host of sensors
  • RADIO - a special mention as most of the high end smartphones do not have this feature even at the high price tag

A mention again about the M8 camera settings as it is arguably the best feature. T
he Dual Camera set up adds in a new feature set to proceedings. You see, the reason that it's a wrongly termed as DUAL is because only one of the sensors is a real camera, where the other scans the scene and provides depth, with that info then embedded into the photo. You can then look at that photo and decide on the focus level yourself by tapping anywhere on the screen to give you a high level of control over the image (check the photo at the start of this post). The same depth info allows you to change the background, copy and paste people out of the snap and into another (think rudimentary Photoshop) or add falling blossom for some odd reason.

WHAT'S WEIRD:

  • With power comes responsibility and HTC M8 disappoints a bit with the battery which is just 2600mAh. Android devices, predominantly, are known for poor battery performance and one can expect the same here.
  • There are two cameras at the rear side, only one works and the other is just for more detailed inputs. It is an innovation - no doubt - but would it really differentiate in the regular casual photography that smartphones are known for - is a catch. Photoshop based features are not that accurate for now but time will tell.

Verdict:

Clearly, there is a lot of thought that has gone into making this master piece. I could be old fashioned to want a radio in a smartphone that will cost me Half a Lakh of my hard earned rupees. Seems to be a promising gadgets to own and flaunt! Thumbs up from me.
